Exhibit description | Mastelis 1:100. Platesnis ir trumpesnis už „ilguosius“ vikingų karinių laivų tipą (angl. longship) knaras (nor. knarr) buvo pritaikytas kroviniams gabenti tolimais maršrutais. Korpusas apvalesnis ir talpesnis nei karinių laivų, pagrindinė varomoji jėga – rėjinė burė. Jūrų vėplių iltys, mediena, vilna, kviečiai, medus, kailiai, odos, ginklai ir vergai atsidurdavo ant atviro knaro denio. Baltijos, Šiaurės ir Viduržemio jūromis bei Šiaurės Atlanto vandenynu driekėsi vikingų prekybinio laivyno maršrutai. Šalia kitų būtiniausių produktų Islandijos, Grenlandijos ir Vinlando gyvenvietėms buvo plukdomi gyvi gyvuliai (avys ir arkliai). Manoma, kad būtent su šiais laivais, beveik pusę tūkstantmečio anksčiau už kitus europiečius (apie 1000 m.), vikingai perplaukė Atlanto vandenyną ir pasiekė „naujo“ žemyno, kuris vėliau bus pavadintas Amerikos vardu, krantus. |
