Information about historical, cultural and art object
Plot | Barbora. Viena iš populiariausių šventųjų mergelių kankinių (šventė XII.4), manoma, gyvenusi I a. Mažojoje Azijoje. Jos gyvenimas, nepagrįstas tikrais istoriniais faktais, atpasakotas „Aukso legendoje”. Barboros individualus atributas yra bokštas, paprastai su trimis langais, vaizduojamas už jos, peizažo fone, arba kaip maketas laikomas rankoje. Bokštas – aliuzija į legendą, pasak kurios, pagonis tėvas Dioskuras, norėdamas apsaugoti dukterį nuo gerbėjų, pastatęs bokštą ir ją ten įkurdinęs. Bokštas turėjęs tiktai du langus. Tėvui nesant, Barbora įtikinusi tarną iškirsti ir trečiąjį, neva į vonios kambarį. Kai grįžęs tėvas paklausė kam to reikėję, duktė atsakiusi: „Žinok, tėve, kad siela gauna šviesą pro tris langus – Tėvą, Sūnų ir Šventąją Dvasią, ir Trys yra viena”. Taip Barbora išsidavusi apie savo naująjį tikėjimą, nes kol tėvo nebuvo namie, ją slapta aplankęs, atvertęs ir pakrikštijęs Bažnyčios tėvo Origeno mokinys, persirengęs gydytoju. Seniesiems dievams ištikimas užsirūstinęs, ir jai tekę bėgti. Pasislėpusi uolos plyšyje, bet piemuo išdavęs jos slėptuvę. Tėvas ištraukęs ją už plaukų ir perdavęs romėnų valdžiai. Barbora atsisakiusi išsižadėti savo tikėjimo, buvusi kankinama ir galiausiai nukirsdinta tėvo kardu. Todėl tėvą nutrenkęs žaibas, o kūną sunaikinusi liepsna. Tikėta, kad šv. Barbora apsaugo nuo staigios mirties žaibo ar audros metu (ir apskritai nuo ugnies), todėl ji būna vaizduojama su taure ir Ostija, simbolizuojančiomis paskutinio sakramento suteikimą; kartais su povu – nemirtingumo simboliu.
