Exhibit description | Šis nedidelis XVI a. sukurtas žemėlapis turi labai svarbią reikšmę. Tai pirmas plačiai paplitęs Lietuvos žemėlapis. Iki tol žemėlapiuose Lietuva dažnai būdavo vaizduojama su Lenkija arba kitomis kaimyninėmis valstybėmis. Jo viršuje kairėje pavaizduotas kartušas su lotynišku įrašu LITHVANIA, o apačioje dešinėje nedidelėmis raidėmis įsiamžinęs žemėlapio autorius Gerardas Merkatorius (Gerardus Mercator, 1512–1594). G. Merkatorius, neretai vadinamas kartografijos tėvu, gimė Rumpelmonde (dab. Belgija). Jis studijavo Levene, kur ir dirbo nuo 1534 metų. G. Merkatorius sukūrė Žemės ir dangaus gaublius, daug žemėlapių (pasaulio, Europos, Palestinos, Flandrijos). 1552 m. persikėlė į Duisburgą, kur nuo 1585 m. leido Europos šalių žemėlapius rinkiniui, kurį pirmasis ėmė vadinti atlasu (Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi et fabricati figura). Šį atlasą su jame buvusiu ir Lietuvos žemėlapiu po G. Merkatoriaus mirties 1595 m. Duisburge išleido jo sūnus. Pats G. Merkatorius nebuvo lankęsis Lietuvoje. Rengdamas žemėlapį jis naudojosi ankstesnių kartografų – Jokūbo Gastaldžio (Giacomo Gastaldi, 1500–1566), Andriaus Pograbkos (Andrzej Pograbka, † 1602) ir kitų – parengtais žemėlapiais bei surinkta informacija. Lietuvos žemėlapyje pavaizduota apie 20 upių ir daugiau negu 60 gyvenviečių. Kitoje žemėlapio pusėje aprašyta Lietuva. Žinoma, kad 1606 m. G. Merkatoriaus parengtas žemėlapių klišes jo palikuonys perleido Amsterdamo (Olandija) leidėjui Jodokui Hondijui (Jodocus Hondius, 1563–1612). Tad tas pats atlasas buvo daug kartų perleistas Amsterdame. Nuo 1595 iki 1642 m. galėjo būti apie 40 G. Merkatoriaus atlaso leidimų |
