Exhibit description | Ši knyga – tai įvairių autorių, rašiusių apie Lenkijos ir Lietuvos istoriją bei santvarką, darbų rinkinys. Joje pateikiami Varmės vyskupo Martyno Kromerio (Marcin Kromer, 1512–1589), iš Italijos kilusio kronikininko Aleksandro Gvanjinio (Alessandro Guagnini, 1538–1614) ir kitų autorių tekstai. Knygos sudarytoju laikomas Nyderlandų geografas Johanesas de Letas (Johannes de Laet, 1593–1649). Įdomus ne tik leidinio turinys, bet ir atsiradimo aplinkybės. Knyga išleista Leidene, garsiojoje Elzevyrų (Elsevier) leidykloje. Šią leidyklą labiausiai išgarsino Mažųjų respublikų serija – nedideli, kišeninio formato, tomeliai, skirti tam tikrai valstybei, jos geografijos, politikos, ekonomikos ir istorijos apžvalgai. Nuo 1625 iki 1649 m. Elzevyrų leidykla išleido 35 šios serijos knygeles. Jų leistos knygos išsiskyrė puikia poligrafija, aukštu moksliniu lygiu ir nedidele kaina. Leidėjai, pasitelkę naują šriftą ir taip sumažinę knygų formatą, atpigino knygą ir padarė ją prieinamą gausesniems visuomenės sluoksniams. Knygos titulinį lapą puošia vario raižinys. Jame pakabinto audinio fone vaizduojamas jungtinis Lenkijos ir Lietuvos herbas. Abipus jo – du vyriškiai: dešinysis vilki Vakarų Europoje paplitusius šarvus, kairysis – sarmatiškąją aprangą. Herbas vaizduojamas gana neįprastai: be būdingų elementų – Lenkijos Erelio, Lietuvos Raitelio, Švedijos Trijų karūnų ir Folkungų Liūtų bei Vazų Javų pėdo centre, apačioje vaizduojamas ir herbas Sas. Tai leidžia daryti prielaidą, kad herbo motyvas buvo nusižiūrėtas nuo XVII a. pradžioje Bydgoščiaus kalykloje kaldintų monetų, kuriose buvo vaizduojamas Lenkijos iždininko Mikalojaus Danilovičiaus (Mikołaj Daniłowicz) herbas Sas.
