Description
Exhibit description | Bernardas Konoras (Bernard Connor, O’Connor, 1666–1698) gimė Kerio grafystėje, Airijoje. Prancūzijoje studijavo mediciną, ten susipažino su studentais iš Lenkijos (manoma, kad su Lenkijos didžiojo kanclerio Jono Velopolskio (Jan Wielopolski) sūnumis). Su jais keliavo po Italiją, vėliau atvyko į Lenkiją. 1694 m. Jonas Sobieskis B. Konorą paskyrė dvaro gydytoju. Gyvendamas Lenkijoje jis susidomėjo Lenkijos ir Lietuvos istorija, valstybės santvarka. Nors čia rezidavo tik apie metus, turėjo galimybę bendrauti su žymiais to meto žmonėmis ir net pačiu valdovu Jonu Sobieskiu, kurį labai gerbė. 1694 m. lapkričio 11 d. išvyko iš Varšuvos ir kaip gydytojas lydėjo Jono Sobieskio dukterį Teresę Kunigundą į Briuselį, kai ji vyko susitikti su sužadėtiniu, Bavarijos kunigaikščiu Maksimilijonu Emanueliu. Iš Briuselio B. Konoras per Nyderlandus išvyko į Londoną. Dėstė Oksforde, Londone ir Kembridže. Net ir gyvendamas Anglijoje nenutraukė ryšių su Respublika, susirašinėjo su kai kuriais didikais. 1698 m. iš Kembridžo grįžo į Londoną, susirgo nenustatyta liga ir mirė. Parašė apie 30 medicinos veikalų. Istorikams įdomi jo knyga The History of Poland..., išleista Londone 1698 metais. Kaip teigia pats autorius, sumanymas parašyti šią knygą susijęs su 1697 m. Lenkijos karaliaus ir Lietuvos didžiojo kunigaikščio rinkimais, kai visas Europos ir Anglijos dėmesys buvo nukreiptas į Abiejų Tautų Respubliką. Knygoje rašoma apie Lenkijos ir Lietuvos istoriją, santvarką, įvykius, kurių liudytojas buvo pats autorius. B. Konoro parengta Lenkijos ir Lietuvos istorija – vienas pirmųjų veikalų anglų kalba, skirtų šių kraštų istorijai. Valdovų rūmų muziejui priklausantis šio veikalo egzempliorius vokiečių kalba išleistas 1700 m. Leipcige.
