Exhibit description | Kūrinyje vaizduojamas Jonas Mačiulis-Maironis (1862–1932) – lietuvių romantizmo poetas, katalikų kunigas, prelatas. Portretas tapytas realizmo stilistika, pusiaufigūris, kompozicija centruota. Dominuoja šiltos spalvos, gelsvi atspalviai. Maironis vaizduojamas su juoda sutana, apvaliais akiniais, kaire ranka verčiantis knygą, jo žvilgsnis nusuktas į dešinę. Kuriamas dinamiškumo įspūdis. Apačioje, dešinėje yra autoriaus signatūra – „A. Šimkūnas 1922 m“.
Kūrinys buvo nutapytas Maironio užsakymu. Prelatas pozavo savo namuose – Rotušės a. 13 (dabar MLLM), mažajame salone, sėdintis ant raudono aksomo krėslo. Čia portretas, įrėmintas į paauksuotus rėmus, kurį laiką ir kabėjo, tačiau Maironio džiaugsmas ilgai netruko. Šimkūnas, nusprendęs antrą kartą pasipelnyti, pasiskolino paveikslą fotografavimui ir pardavė Karo muziejui. Apie suktą Šimkūno elgesį Maironis sužinojo tik po metų, gavęs kvietimą apsilankyti muziejaus ekspozicijoje. 1932 m. Maironio laidotuvių dienomis paveikslas juodomis drobėmis buvo pritvirtintas Karo muziejaus sodelyje prie „Laisvės“ paminklo postamento. |
