Information about the museum
The Lithuanian Aviation Museum was founded in 1990 and is located in Aleksotas, Kaunas, on the grounds of the Darius and Girėnas Airfield. The museum operates in the former site of the Kaunas civil airport.
Exhibits include over forty different aircraft. Among the exhibits inside and outside the museum are gliders, airplanes, military aircraft and helicopters that were manufactured and used in Lithuania. One of the most popular exhibits is the replica of the Lituanica aircraft. The famous Lithuanian aviators Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas were among the first to fly over the Atlantic Ocean in the same model of plane in 1933. Visitors can explore a collection of aircraft engines, model planes, historical photographs and other exhibits, as well as take a seat in the pilot training cabins of the An-2 aircraft and a helicopter. The museum also houses an exhibition on the history of firefighting.
The branches of the Lithuanian Aviation Museum include the birthplaces of the famous Lithuanian aviators Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas, who in 1933 were one of the first to fly over the Atlantic Ocean in the Lituanica aeroplane, and the commemorative exhibitions installed there.
