Information about the museum
Kaunas District Museum is a significant institution for the accumulation of museum values and the preservation of the historical heritage. It was established in 2013 on October 24th.
Some subdivisions of the museum began to exist during the Soviet time on the basis of the activities of amateur ethnographers and school ethnographic camps, mostly formed for didactic purposes. Thus, the formation of most of the current exhibits is largely the merit of the particular educators of the time and their activists, usually students, rather than government officials or the Ministry of Culture. A kind of informal mini-museum was opened in Raudondvaris, in Lithuanian Institute of Agricultural Mechanization and Electrification, in 1972. Babtai Local History Museum was established in 1958 in a school space, formed by archaeological finds (coins, axes, etc.) taken by pupils and managed and grouped by teacher Marija Markauskienė, when the exhibits were still abundant in Lithuanian villages and fields at that time.
Kaunas Region Museum now unites 5 subdivisions: Juozas Naujalis Memorial Museum and its branch in Biliūnai village, Antanas and Jonas Juškos Ethnic Culture Museum, Babtai Local History Museum, Traditional Crafts Centre, Tadas Ivanauskas Obelynė homestead.
