Information about the museum

The history of Lazdijai Regional Museum is long and interesting. The museum building itself is one of the oldest in Lazdijai town – it is the old gymnasium of Seinai. In 1920 “Žiburys“ Gymnasium moved from Seinai to Lazdijai. In the deserted Marija Krupavičienė's house, built in the 19th century, under the leadership of the director priest Motiejus Gustaitis (1870–1927), educational program for the youth of the region was started to organize. The house was simple, unadapted to the school, lacking inventory. Over the time the building has expanded. In 1924 the first Dzūkija Museum was opened. Its creator and founder, Motiejus Gustaitis, collected a large number of museum exhibits through teachers, parishes, students: stone finds, folk art, tools used in Dzūkija, crosses, chapels, toys, household utensils, cloths, jewelry. Motiejus Gustaitis devoted his personal assets to the museum: several original paintings, a number of manuscripts, various sets of old and rare books and newspapers.

Since 1974 the memorial exhibition of the poet Salomėja Neris (1904–1945) ran on the second floor of the former “Žiburys“ Gymnasium. In 1995, after the renovation of the building, Lazdijai History, Culture and Education Museum was established here. Since 2004 it is called Lazdijai Regional Museum. Five more museums are connected to it: Motiejus Gustaitis Memorial House-Museum, Museum of Freedom Fights, Pranas Dzūkas Ethnographic Homestead, Veisiejai Regional Museum, Kapčiamiestis Emilija Pliaterytė Museum.

Pranas Dzūkas Ethnography Farmstead	Delnicos k., Šeštokų sen., LT-67421, Lazdijų r. sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit Pranas Dzūkas Ethnographic Homestead is the largest subdivision of Lazdijai Regional Museum. In 1972 on the initiative of Algirdas Savulis this museum-homestead, which reflects Dzūkija village household in the 20th century, was established. Pranas Dzūkas Ethnographic Homestead consists of 6 buildings, one of them is adapted for stage activities. Pranas Dzūkas Ethnographic Hometead exhibits reflect the 20th century picture of rural life in the village. Most of the exhibits consist of antique farm implements, furniture, and household items. One of the homestead buildings houses large exhibits. Both in size and rarity, the oil press is distinguished. The machine was used to press flaxseed oil until the 20th century.
Emilija Pliaterytė's Museum in Kapčiamiestis	Taikos g. 11, Kapčiamiestis, LT-67313, Lazdijų r. sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit Kapčiamiestis Emilija Pliaterytė Museum was established in 1984 in Kapčiamiestis School. Ethnologists, teachers and town residents were actively involved in this work. The aim was to create conditions for the educational and creative activities for the school community. In 2006 this museum became a subdivision of Lazdijai Regional Museum and was named after the warrior Emilija Pliaterytė (1806-1831). She was the captain of the rebellion against the oppression of Tsarist Russia in 1831, spent the last days of her life in Justinavas manor near Kapčiamiestis. Emilija Pliaterytė died in 1831, at the age of 25 years. She was buried secretly in the old cemetery of Kapčiamiestis. The museum currently runs 4 exhibitions, including stories told about the warrior Emilija Pliaterytė, traditional culture and every day life of Kapčiamiestis, famous people from Kapčiamiestis region and the one about engineer, traveler, photographer Antanas Sadeckas.
Museum of Fights for Freedom	Vytauto g. 18, Lazdijai, LT-67122, Lazdijų r. sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit Museum of Freedom Fights was established in 1992 on the initiative of exiles, partisans, political prisoners and their relatives. The exhibition is located in the house where the KGB was located in the postwar period. The exhibits were donated by the people from Lazdijai region. In 1994 museum opened with the name “Blood Roads“, and in 2004 it was connected to Lazdijai Regional Museum. The museum collects memories and material testimonies of political prisoners, deportees, partisans, officers and residents about the period of 1944–1953.
Veisiejai Region Museum	Vytauto g. 47, Veisiejai, LT-67337, Lazdijų r. sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit Veisiejai Regional Museum was established in 1998 in the house of Benjaminas Rudas, at the beginning of the 20th century. Visitors to the museum are introduced to famous people of the Veisiai region (composer Juozas Neimontas, founder of the international Esperanto language Ludvik Lazaris Zamenhof, poet Sigitas Geda), deportations, the guerrilla movement, and the history of the development of education in the Veisiai region. The museum has a large ethnographic exposition.
Motiejus Gustaitis Memorial House-Museum	Seinų g. 31, Lazdijai, LT-67114, Lazdijų r. sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit Motiejus Gustaitis Memorial House-Museum opened its doors in 1990. Here in the period of 1924–1927 lived the educator, exemplary clergyman, poet, pioneer of symbolism, writer, musicologist and linguist, translator from Latin, French, Polish, Russian, German, doctor of philosophy, author of the first Lithuanian "Stylistics" textbook – Motiejus Gustaitis (1870–1927).
