Information about the museum

Founded in 1933, the Marijampolė Region and President Kazys Grinius Museum is one of the oldest museums in the ethnographic region of Sudovia, currently established in the former courthouse, a neoclassical building complex from the late 19^th century.

Visitors can explore the museum's permanent exhibitions: The Spirit of the Nation and A Town by the River Šešupė and learn more about the Sudovian way of life and the history of the town and region of Marijampolė. The museum offers many impressive and unique exhibits: a nearly 3000-year-old human skeleton, some of the largest cremation urns in Lithuania, an impressively large book of legislative acts from Marijampolė District Court, a chapel commemorating the 1863 Uprising and many other exhibits of daily life, numismatics, literature and textiles.

The museum has three branches: the Lithuanian President Kazys Grinius Memorial Museum, the Tauras County Partisans and Exile Museum, and the Museum of Writer Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas.

Tauras Partisan Military District and Deportation Museum	Vytauto g. 29, Marijampolė, LT-68300, Marijampolės sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit The Tauras County Partisan and Exile Museum is a branch of the Marijampolė Region and President Kazys Grinius Museum, founded in 1993 on the initiative of local political prisoners and exiles. The museum preserves the memory of the most tragic times of Lithuania: the exile and the armed resistance in the post-war period. It collects and exhibits relics, weapons, archival documents, photographs and memories of both exiles and partisans related to the armed anti-Soviet resistance of the Lithuanian nation in 1944–1953 in Sudovia. The museum's display invites visitors to learn about the founding history of Tauras Partisan County. Much attention is also paid to the Tauras County individual partisan troops. One of the exhibition halls presents information about the perpetrators of the genocide of the Lithuanian nation and about their victims.

Mykolaitis-Putinas Memorial Museum	Kauno g. 7, Marijampolė, LT-68175, Marijampolės sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit The Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas Museum is a branch of the Marijampolė Region and President Kazys Grinius Museum. It collects and displays exhibits related to the life and work of the writer Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas. On display are the writer's volumes of poetry, plays and part of his personal library; his works translated into foreign languages are also exhibited. The exhibition presents the facts about the writer's personal life and the development of his creative work.

President's of Lithuania Kazys Grinius Memorial Museum	Bažnyčios g. 23, Marijampolė, LT-68298, Marijampolės sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit The President of Lithuania Kazys Grinius Memorial Museum was established in 1998, in a cultural heritage site – 19th century wooden house, built in 1904-1914. The President of Lithuania Kazys Grinius (1866–1950) lived here with his family. The house became the center of cultural movement of the whole Užnemunė and was called "Griniai House". The first in the area public performance "America in a bathhouse" was shown in the house on May 28, 1905. Also, meetings and rehearsals of the choir took place here. A society "Šviesa" ("Light") with a lot of branches in Suvalkija and a library of the society were established in "Griniai house". The main activity of the museum is to collect and preserve exhibits related to the life and activities of Lithuanian President Kazys Grinius.
