Information about the museum
Founded in 1933, the Marijampolė Region and President Kazys Grinius Museum is one of the oldest museums in the ethnographic region of Sudovia, currently established in the former courthouse, a neoclassical building complex from the late 19th century.
Visitors can explore the museum's permanent exhibitions: The Spirit of the Nation and A Town by the River Šešupė and learn more about the Sudovian way of life and the history of the town and region of Marijampolė. The museum offers many impressive and unique exhibits: a nearly 3000-year-old human skeleton, some of the largest cremation urns in Lithuania, an impressively large book of legislative acts from Marijampolė District Court, a chapel commemorating the 1863 Uprising and many other exhibits of daily life, numismatics, literature and textiles.
The museum has three branches: the Lithuanian President Kazys Grinius Memorial Museum, the Tauras County Partisans and Exile Museum, and the Museum of Writer Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas.
