Information about the museum
The Panevėžys Local Lore Museum is one of the oldest regional museums in Lithuania, opened in the city's oldest building, the former Court Office, dating back to 1614 on the occasion of the second anniversary of the annexation of the Klaipėda region in 1925.
The museum collects, preserves, researches and exhibits archaeological, ethnographic and historical material connected with the town and Panevėžys County; it conducts research and carries out educational work. The museum holds articles and documents relating to many influential personalities of the Panevėžys region. The museum is particularly proud of its collection of the insects of the world, full of exotic, now-extinct insects from Europe, Africa, America and Oceania.
The Panevėžys Local Lore Museum has two branches. The exhibition The Nobles of Upytė, installed in the oldest building of Panevėžys, takes visitors back to the time of the Lithuanian Grand Duchy and presents the life of nobles at that time. The exhibition on the Anti-Soviet Resistance and the Reform Movement of Lithuania illustrates the scope of Lithuanian resistance to the totalitarian regime, from the Soviet occupation period to the restoration of independence.
