Information about the museum

The Raseiniai Region History Museum is located in the buildings of the former Raseiniai Arrest House-NKVD-MGB prison. The Raseiniai Arrest House was built in 1930 according to an interesting design by German architects. The arrest house complex consisted of a two-storey prison building, two-flange administrative-farm building and a house for prison staff. The specifics of the Raseiniai Arrest House were different from other Lithuanian arrest houses. From 1932 onwards, it was a concentration point for the imprisonment of juveniles from all over Lithuania, most of them of communist persuasion. The building became too cramped. Expansion of the prison centre began in 1935 – 60 prison cells were installed in a newly built three-storey wing. In 1940, the Raseiniai Arrest House was incorporated into the prison system in the Soviet Union and became NKVD-MGB Prison No 9. The prison was overcrowded during both – the Soviet and Nazi occupations. Here residents of Raseiniai County who had committed crimes against the occupation authorities or did not pleased them in any way were interrogated and awaited sentencing. One other prisoner returned to freedom, but most of the prisoners were sent to serve their sentences in concentration camps in Siberia. The prison was liquidated in 1952. The building houses were reorganized to re-education facility for young offenders. In 1953, in these buildings was established a vocational technical school, and in 1975 the public museum of the Raseiniai region received premises. After the reconstruction of the building in 1985-1987, the entire building became the permanent home of the Raseiniai Museum. In 1992 the first expositions reflecting the history of the Raseiniai region, folk art, traditional crafts were opened. The museum has expanded in terms of the number of exhibits, new expositions, and changing activities.
