Information about the museum

The museum is located in the former Šilokarčema (Šilutė) Manor, the only remaining and restored manor in the Klaipėda region. The museum collections represent the manor culture of the Lithuania Minor region and the ethnic and cultural uniqueness of these lands.

The German-born landowner, Hugo Scheu (1845–1935), was one of the most prominent personalities of the Klaipėda region, who contributed significantly to the growth of Šilutė and established the first museum of the Klaipėda region in two rooms of the estate. Towards the end of the Second World War, the manor was severely damaged, and in 1949 Šilutė Regional Museum was founded on the basis of the remaining valuables.

The museum's permanent exhibitions, based on the remaining collections of Hugo Scheu, showcase the landowner's personality, his family history, and the results of his cultural, scientific, and social contributions. The authentic frescoed hall and the foyer both represent the old interior of the manor house.

The museum has a library, archives, and a Restoration and Education Centre. It has three branches (exhibitions) located Švėkšna, Žemaičių Naumiestis and the village of Macikai.

Švėkšna Exposition	Bažnyčios g. 9A, Švėkšna, LT-99397, Šilutės r. sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit The Švėkšna Exhibition is a branch of the Šilutė Hugo Scheu Museum. Many exhibits that now belong to this branch used to belong to the Švėkšna Manor, which had collections of antiques, paintings, and hunting trophies. Paintings by famous Lithuanian painters and German engravings decorated the rooms of the manor rooms, while light blue Delft porcelain plates adorned the walls of the dining room. A large number of valuables were destroyed or carried off during World War II, and those that remained are now on display in the Švėkšna Exhibition. Today, the exhibition consists of 4 halls (Ethnography, Archaeology, the History of the Manor, and the History of the Town). Among the most valuable exhibits is a Lithuanian Statute, which dates back to the 17th century.
Macikai Village Concentration Camp-Lockup	Vilties g. 2, Macikų k., LT-99156, Šilutės r. sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit The Exposition of Macikai Prisoner-of-War Camps is a branch of the Šilutė Hugo Scheu Museum. The village of Macikai is a unique place not only in Lithuania but in the whole Eastern Europe. In the POW camp that was established here, crimes were committed by both German and Soviet Union governments. Of the former concentration camp buildings, only one punishment cell remains. In 1995, on the initiative of the exiles and political prisoners of Šilutė, a museum was opened. Nearby is the cemetery where the concentration camp prisoners are buried. The exhibition presents unique photographs of prisoners of war from the camp (Gulag), artefacts discovered during archaeological excavations, paintings on the theme of exile and other relevant exhibits.
Žemaičių Naumiestis Exhibition	Pergalės a. 17, Žemaičių Naumiestis, Šilutės r. sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit The Exhibition in Žemaičių Naumiestis is a branch of the Šilutė Hugo Scheu Museum. The exhibits collected in the Žemaičių Naumiestis branch depict the life, occupations, and crafts of the inhabitants of the former Žemaičių Naumiestis district, as well as the history of the town's ethnic communities. It houses valuable archaeological, ethnographic, historiographic, iconographic, folkloristic, and numismatic collections. At present, the museum has only one exhibition hall, where ethnographic objects, furnishings of a wealthy citizen and exhibits of three religious denominations in the town of Žemaičių Naumiestis are displayed. Among them are Protestant songbooks, the Holy Book of Judaism and Catholic prayer books.
