Information about the museum

The Birštonas Museum of Sacral Art is a unit of Birštonas Museum, and was opened in 2000 next to the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua at the old parish rectory, noteworthy for its ethnographic architectural features.

The Museum is dedicated to the memory of the martyr Archbishop Teofilius Matulionis and Cardinal Vincentas Sladkevičius. Then-Bishop Matulionis lived at the Birštonas rectory in 1956–1958. During the preparation for the Museum’s establishment, the old rectory was renovated, restoring its appearance to that of the resort’s buildings in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The veranda, removed during the Soviet occupation, and elements of Lithuanian wooden architecture (specifically, wood-carvings) were restored. In this building in 1957, then-Rev. Vincentas Sladkevičius was consecrated a bishop by then-Bishop Matulionis. The consecration was important not only to the congregation of the Kaišiadorys diocese, but also to the history of the entire Lithuanian Catholic Church and to the history of the restoration of Lithuania’s independence.
