Information about the museum

The Art Deco Museum makes it home in an apartment in a luxurious building located in the very centre of Kaunas. The building’s construction was commissioned in 1929 by physician and professor Pranas Gudavičius. The four-story building was designed by architect Edmundas Alfonsas Frykas. Each floor was designed to have two apartments. The building’s owner, Professor Gudavičius, lived with his family on the first floor, where he also operated a private clinic. He rented the other apartments to wealthy Kaunas residents.

The museum is located in a 118-square-meter apartment, which was purchased in 2017 by businessmen Karolis Banys and Petras Gaidamavičius. The apartment consists of four rooms (dining room, living room, study, and bedroom), servant’s room, kitchen, bathroom, and corridor. The former owners preserved the authentic layout of the interwar apartment as well as interior elements: doors, parquet, floor tiles, skirting boards (baseboards), cast-iron sink in the bathroom, cold closet built into the kitchen wall, and closets built into the wall of the corridor. Banys and Gaidamavičius employed a team of restorers, architecture researchers, historians, art historians and artists to restore the apartment’s authentic environment. The Museum’s founders invite the public to get acquainted with the rich architecture of 1929 and to visit the restored Art Deco apartment.
