Information about the museum
The National Museum of Lithuania is the country‘s largest single keeper and promoter of the main collections reflecting the history of Lithuania’s statehood and cultural development. The Museum is the inheritor of collections from the Vilnius Antiquities Museum, founded in 1855 and opened to the public in 1856, and from the Lithuanian Scientific Society (1907–1941), and the Museum carries on the work begun by those earlier institutions. The Museum’s mission is to collect, preserve, research, conserve, restore and popularise Lithuanian archaeological, historical and ethnic cultural assets of national significance, cultivate the identity of national culture and bring it into public life, and educate the public’s historical self-consciousness.
Today, the Museum preserves over 1.5 million exhibits and unites eleven units. In the buildings of the Vilnius castles and the former military stronghold – Gediminas Castle Tower, the Old Arsenal and the New Arsenal, the Bastion of the Vilnius Defensive Wall – visitors are introduced to the history of pre-modern Lithuania. In other units of the Museum – the former Detention House, the House of Signatories, the Kazys Varnelis House-Museum – a narrative of the modern history of Lithuania is presented, while the story of national revival is told at the Jonas Basanavičius Birthplace, the Vincas Kudirka Museum and the Jonas Šliūpas Museum. In the newest branch of the museum, the Castellan’s House, you can find out more about the history of Lithuania, the most important events and figures of the state, and other topics of relevance to the Lithuanian state.
