Information about the museum

The Underground Information Centre is a branch of the Lithuanian Geological Survey. It collects, preserves, and researches important geological exhibits and presents extensive geological material about the depths of the Earth and the achievements of geological science to the general public. In the Underground Information Centre, for the first time, an integral presentation of Lithuanian geology was created, aiming to chronologically present the composition and structure of the Earth's strata, the paleogeographic conditions of the ancient geological periods, and the processes of mineral formation.

The museum holds a core sample of over 1136 drills of over 2 kilometres deep since 1953. A core sample is a cylindrical piece of rock obtained by core drilling. It serves as a geologic chronicle of the site and a primary source of geologic information. The Centre also has a boulder thin section, Lithuanian minerals, commemorative exhibitions of Professor Juozas Dalinkevičius and palaeontologist Alfonsas Žukelis, and an exhibition of rocks currently in formation.

In the park near the Centre is a display of boulders. Among shrubs and trees, near two bodies of water, footpaths lead to boulders – witnesses of continental ice formation, brought from various Lithuanian regions and now arranged in groups on the lawn.
