Information about the museum

The Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum collects, preserves, researches, restores and promotes the work of theatre, music and film professionals based both in Lithuania and abroad, as well as the creative work of art education institutions and cultural organisations.

The Theatre Museum was founded in Kaunas in 1926, and in 1996 it was opened in Vilnius, at Minor Radvilos Palace, where the Vilnius City Theatre had been located since the late 18th century.

The museum's permanent exhibition presents the history of Lithuanian professional theatre, cinema and music, including the most famous directors, actors, opera singers, conductors, composers and other prominent people. Figures of the contemporary Lithuanian theatre are also represented.

Musical instruments occupy a special place in the exhibition, and particularly fascinating is the collection of mechanical musical instruments. A separate room is dedicated to the history of William Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Lithuanian theatre, where visitors can immerse themselves in the environment of the play and see the recordings of the premieres of the most famous directors.
