Anzelmas Matutis and his family moved to the red masonry on Taika Street in Alytus in 1961. The newly built two-storey detached house brought a lot of joy. The room space, the large garden and the pine forest on the other side of the street, and the wonderful tranquility of Taika Street were delightful. The noise of the city was not heard, pines roared here. 

A. Matutis chose the brightest room on the second floor with a view to the forest, so that when he opened the window, he could hear the birds squeaking. In the house he created himself, the poet spent the rest of his life. It was in this environment that the writer’s most creative years passed. Here he was preparing for lessons, was enjoying the edition of each new book, was returning after each long journey. At the invitation of a tireless host, many writers, translators, artists and literary critics not only from Lithuania, but also from Russia, Poland and Ukraine visited the poet. A. Matutis has been in contact with many people, so his preserved letters are very valuable. 

The Museum of Archaeology is part of the Alytus Ethnographic Museum. Visitors can view the three-part archaeological exhibition When there weren’t enough trees for all the souls (the title is based on the regional tribal belief that souls are embodied in trees). The first part presents Stone Age finds in Lithuania and the significance of flint in Southern Lithuania as well as the flint-ware made in the region. The second part focuses on the Iron Age and highlights the life of the Yotvingian tribes. In the third part, archaeological finds tell the history of Alytus from its beginnings until the 16^th century, when the capital of Dzūkija was granted Magdeburg rights.

A temporary exhibition presents the finds of the Bazorai Necropolis. Visitors can try using quern-stones to grind grain as well as using other old implements to polish stone or carve wood. Visitors get acquainted with history not only by looking at the exhibits, but also by viewing material on an interactive screen. Educational programs for visitors of various ages have been prepared.

A part of the Alytus Ethnographic Museum, the Audiovisual Arts Centre was established in 2021 at the former Alytus Synagogue, built more than a century ago. Some of the new centre’s space is devoted to commemorating the Jewish community of Alytus, while other parts of the centre host exhibitions, concerts, conferences, seminars, educational events, training, lectures, book presentations, film screenings and other events related to various forms of artistic expression.
