Information about the museum
Alytus Local History Museum is the largest state museum in Southern Lithuania, founded in 1928. The museum focuses on the region's past and history. The museum collects, preserves, researches, exhibits, restores and popularizes museum values that reflect the history of Dainava region, cultural and natural diversity from ancient times and fill the collections of the museum. In carrying out its socio-cultural mission, the Alytus Local History Museum preserves memory, disseminates information and establishes the peculiarities of the city's identity.
The following branches belong to theAlytus Local History Museum: poet A.Matutis Memorial Museum, poet A. Jonynas Memorial Museum, archeological exhibition “When There Are No Trees Left For The Souls”, that works as a subdivision of the museum and the Audiovisual Arts Center located in a former synagogue.
