Information about the museum

Birštonas Museum was founded in 1967 in a wooden building built in 1932–1933. The Museum‘s permanent exhibition was opened in 1972; updated and supplemented over the years, it remains on display. Exhibits collected by the Birštonas Secondary School’s local historians and ethnographers form the basis of the permanent exhibition. The Museum’s building was originally constructed as a summer cottage, which stands out from its neighbours with its decorative turrets and unique ornamental decorative elements in the main façade. The noteworthy building has been included in the list of protected cultural heritage objects.

The Museum in the former wooden villa has become a favourite of both Lithuanian holidaymakers as well as foreign tourists. Half an hour at the Museum is enough to discover intriguing facts about the resort’s history and to see many enriching historical, artistic and even technical exhibits.

The Birštonas Museum’s exhibition space consists of several parts. The first, Birštonas in ancient times, displays archaeological finds, photographs and so on. The second describes the establishment of the resort in Birštonas and its development up to the First World War. The exhibition showcases copies of scientific works by researchers who examined the local mineral springs, articles in the press, and fragments of equipment used in the resort’s treatment centres.

The Birštonas Museum of Sacral Art is a unit of the Birštonas Museum.
