Information about the museum
The Specialized Railway Museum is the first museum of this type in Lithuania. It was founded in 1966. The founder of the museum is Georgijus Žemaitis, the railway man. Until 1998 the museum was operating in the administration building of Lithuanian Railway company on Mindaugas street in Vilnius. In 1998–2010 the Railway Museum of Lithuania was operating in the ground floor of residential building in Mindaugas street in Vilnius. In 2011 the museum moved to the historic building – to Vilnius Railway Station. It was located on the second floor of the Passenger Hall and operates there to this day. It is an ideal place for the visitors of the museum to touch the past and experience the atmosphere of a specific historical period.
The purpose of the Railway Museum of Lithuania is to collect, preserve and promote the history of railways and the activities of Lithuanian Railways.
The branch of the Railway Museum is the Šiauliai Railway Museum.
