Information about the museum

The Museum of the History of the Blind in Lithuania was founded at the Lithuanian Library for the Blind in 1977. Today, the Museum belongs to the Vilkpėdė Community Social Services Centre. The Museum acquaints the public with the achievements of the blind in the fields of work, science and art, as well as the inconveniences and obstacles encountered by the blind; the Museum also promotes the sensory exploration of art. Schoolchildren are introduced to the writing system for the visually-impaired created by Louis Braille (1809–1852) as well as other teaching-learning tools for the blind and means of support for the blind.

At the Museum of the History of the Blind in Lithuania, visitors are invited to examine works created by visually-impaired and blind folk artists, the audio equipment used for reading publications, touch-based models for the blind, samples of products made by companies staffed by the blind, and literary works written by blind authors. Most of the exhibits can be not only viewed, but also touched.
