Museum was opened on February 22, 1966 in Antanas Žmuidzinavičius home, which was designed by the famous architect Vytautas Landsbergis-Žemkalnis.

Antanas Žmuidzinavičius‘ paintings and various archive materials are displayed in the museum.

In 1907, together with P. Rimša, M. K. Čiurlionis and other artists he presented the first Lithuanian art exhibition in Vilnius and founded the Lithuanian Art Society, which he led for many years. The artist actively participated in various activities of public organizations. From 1926 to 1940 he taught painting in the Kaunas Art School and from 1941 to 1951 in the Kaunas Applied and Decorative Arts Institute.

The most famous collection of Antanas Žmuidzinavičius is the devil collection. The vast and constantly growing amount of devils was moved from the artist’s studio to a separate extension in 1982. There are over 3,000 of them now – creations of fine and applied-art, souvenirs and masks.

The historic Presidency gives an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with the development of modern Lithuanian statehood. The presidential building is the most significant Lithuanian Republic memorial symbol of the 1918–1940 period and the collection shows important aspects of the Republic of Lithuania of that time.  Presidential meetings with ministers, foreign emissaries, the military, the clergy and representatives of various organizations took place here. In the audience hall, on the first floor of the building, the foreign diplomats used to hand in their credentials. National laws were drawn up in this palace.

The museum was opened in 2001 to honour the 120^th year anniversary of the birth of the sculptor Juozas Zikaras (1881–1944). J. Zikaras built this house and lived in it with his family, his wife Anelė Tubelytė-Zikarienė, and their 4 children. Juozas Zikaras spent his last days in this house and his wife and daughter stayed on.

Juozas Zikaras Memorial Museum contains most of the works of this artist, and a rich archive of the artist’s family. The house is filled not only with the last eleven years of Zikaras’ life, but also with memories of his difficult childhood and youth.

Four living rooms above the workshop are also opened to visitors. The floor of the living room and A. Zikarienė's room is covered with the meloleum, ornamented in the Art Deco style.  The four residential rooms of the museum consist of the living room, A. Zikarienė room, the dining room and J. Zikaras work room. 

On the first floor of the house there is a sculptor's workshop, which occupies 3 rooms: in the first there are 2 looms touched by the artist's hand, examples of Independent Lithuania coins created by the sculptor; in the second and third there are sculptures saved by the wife A. Zikarienė and daughter A. Zikaraitė. The original furniture - the work desk and the chairs - can be found in the work room.   
 

The gallery was opened in 1979 (architects L. Gedgaudienė, J. Navakas). Its original purpose was to serve as a gallery for the M. Žilinskas Collection which had been presented to Kaunas but soon it became obvious that the entire collection could not fit into this building and plans for a new building were undertaken.

Today, Lithuanian and international exhibitions, modern Lithuanian art and Lithuanian Exile art are displayed in this gallery, together with the George Maciunas (Jurgis Mačiūnas) Fluxus room.

Liudas Truikys (1904–1987) was a renowned opera set designer, and Marijona Rakauskaitė (1892–1975) was an opera prima donna. L. Truikys became famous in the interwar period for the scenery created at the State Opera in Kaunas. Recognized at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris, where the artist was awarded a diploma for the stage design of A. Račiūnas' opera "Three Talismans". The most important scenographic projects were created by L. Truikis in the 20th century, 6–9 decades at the Kaunas Musical and Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theaters. Among them, the most famous set design for the operas by G. Verdi "Aida" and "Don Carlos".

The Memorial Museum was opened in 1994, in the studio–flat where the artist and scenographer Liudas Truikys, and his beloved opera singer Marijona Rakauskaitė lived. This house was built in the interwar period, where the couple of artists settled later during the war, looking for a more peaceful and remote place.
This home is a place of respect for different cultures and music, which often awaits everyone, who wants to get deeper into the worldview of these artists, to feel the interwar spirit of those, who believe that the "music shouldn’t be listened with these cabbage leaves (Truikys usually touched his ears by saying this), but by this apparatus (he touched his heart by a hand)".

Expositions

Until this day, everything remained the same in this house: two big salons, an artist’s study room, a bedroom, authentically restored according to pictures and stories. The creative legacy of L. Truikys: paintings, scenography and costumes, church art sketches, and Oriental Art (sculptures, Persian carpets, Chinese Vases, incense burners), as well as collections of Lithuanian folk sculptures. In Marijona Rakauskaitė room, you can find her accessories, cosmetics, stage, and casual wear. In the part, which is dedicated to servants, you can find the details of the authentic interwar interior. The house is surrounded by greenery, with a beautiful panorama of Kaunas.

In Druskininkai, on the main M. K. Čiurlionis street, there are 2 houses where the most famous Lithuanian composer and artist Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911) lived and worked.

The M. K. Čiurlionis Memorial Museum was opened in 1963.

The memorial part of the museum consists of two wooden houses with interiors similar to the authentic one. The permanent exposition of M. K. Čiurlionis Memorial Museum is located in 4 separate buildings. Here the visitor can see the old harmonica and the piano donated to the young composer of Duke Mykolas Oginskis on the occasion of graduation, 2 M. K. Čiurlionis’ paintings: “Jesus” (1905), and "Jesus on the Mount of Olives" (1909). An authentic creative room by M. K. Čiurlionis has survived in the summer house.

M. Žilinskas Art Gallery is a subdivisions of the Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis National Museum of Art. The gallery meant for the collections of foreign art was opened in 1989 and named after Mykolas Žilinskas to honour the famous Lithuanian collector, patron, the former Chancellor of the Ministers’ Cabinet and an exceptionally clever businessman. In 1940, when the Soviets occupied Lithuania, he was forced to emigrate to the West. Mykolas Žilinskas donated to his home town Kaunas 1,685 works of the 16t^h-20^th centuries’ European art from his collection accumulated in West Berlin.
The gallery offers the display of the most valuable paintings from Žilinskas’ collection as well as art treasures of the Far East, Ancient Egypt, the ancient world and Europe accumulated in the museum since 1921. They are mostly the acquisitions from the collections of the Lithuanian noblemen, from the exhibitions from abroad or works of art accumulated by ardent travellers and collectors.
We have selected 90 most valuable and interesting pieces of art for the guided tour. Exhibits from 1 to 30 will tell you about the history of the applied art. Exhibits from 31 to 60 will introduce you to the art of the Ancient Egypt and the Antique. After entering the rooms on the first floor of the gallery and choosing the exhibits from 61 to 90, you will get the possibility to hear the narration on the treasury of the foreign Fine Arts of the 16th-18th centuries. If you wish to listen to the whole guided tour, you ought to allot it an hour and a half.

You will find the first two displays on the ground floor, by turning to the left from the lobby. The exhibition of the “Applied Arts of the 17^th-20^th Centuries” starts on the left; it is displayed in the direction from the right to the left.

The exhibition of the applied arts is comprised of the collections of the Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis National Museum of Art. Until the 2nd half of the 19^th century especially artistic ware used to be produced for the manors of aristocrats and the great monarchs of the European countries only. The demands of the middle class were met by the craftsmen. Here you will get acquainted with the history of porcelain production, its development in Europe, the ware of the famous porcelain manufactories of Meissen, Sèvres, Russia and other countries, with various styles of art, ware of glass and metal, furniture and other pieces of art.

The gallery was built in 1989 (architect Algimantas Kančas). On November 4, 1993 it opened the doors for the visitors. The gallery comprises over 100 works, created from 1931 to 1982 by an exceptionally talented graphic artist, painter, sculptor, stained glass craftsman Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas (1907–1997). All the art work, kept in the gallery, was donated to Lithuania by the artist. 

Jonynas was born in Alytus district on March 16, 1907. He studied at Kudirkos Naumiestas and Kaunas’ gymnasiums. From 1923 to 1929 he studied at the Lithuanian Art School in Kaunas.  In 1931 he went to Paris to continue his studies, specializing in woodcarving and book art as well as the construction of wooden sculptures and furniture. After his personal exhibition in Paris, he came back to Kaunas in 1935.  Here he took part in the activities of the young artists’ group “Ars”, gave lectures at the Kaunas Art School, and later became the director of the Kaunas Applied and Decorative Art Institute. In 1944 the artist moved to Germany. In 1946, with the help of his friend R. Schmitlein, Jonynas founded the Freiburg Art School.  In 1951 he moved to the United States, where he gave lectures and founded a stained glass studio. The artist used to spend his summers in the gallery, talking to his visitors about the creative work. Jonynas died in 1997.
