An exhibition of the Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania was opened on 18 December 2007 in Kaunas, in the building used as the Bank’s main office during the interwar years.

In the exhibition of the Money Museum in Kaunas, the long period of development of the country’s financial and banking system can be seen: the emergence of the first Lithuanian currency, using silver alloy, in the 13th century, the coins of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the establishment of credit institutions in Kaunas in the latter half of the 19th and the early 20th centuries, the founding of the Bank of Lithuania and the creation of the national monetary system, its destruction during the Soviet occupation and the development of the financial system after the restoration of Independence. The exhibition highlights the role of Kaunas as the financial centre in the life of Independent Lithuania in the interwar period (1918-1940).

Visitors can view unique objects from the Museum’s collections: money-producing equipment, designs for coins that were not released into circulation, samples, banknotes that did not become everyday means of payment and other valuable exhibits related to the activities of the Bank of Lithuania during the interwar period and today. The exhibition concludes with a display of commemorative coins issued by the Bank of Lithuania.
