Information about the museum

The Samogitian Art Museum in Plungė, established in the complex of the Oginski Palace, was the first regional museum of fine arts in Lithuania. It was founded in 1994.

The museum primarily aims to collect, preserve, and promote the artists born and residing in Samogitia. It is also entrusted with the preservation of the unique 19th century regional architectural monument, the manor complex of Duke Michal Oginski, also known as Samogitian Versailles. The museum places great importance on bringing back to Lithuania the works of former and current Samogitian émigré artists. It also researches, collects, preserves and promotes other material and spiritual values connected with the history and culture of the region.

The museum has one branch, the Žemaitė Memorial Museum.
