Information about the museum
The Trakai History Museum was founded in 1948 in Trakai Castle, a unique architectural object on the island of Lake Galvė. Today it is one of the most visited tourist objects in Lithuania.
The primary objects presented in the Trakai History Museum are located in a place of importance to the nation and state of Lithuania. The castles and the city of Trakai played an important role in the late Middle Ages: this was where Lithuanian rulers resided, where foreign convoys came, and where critical political decisions were made. Even today, the castles are visited by honoured guests, heads of state, and members of royal families.
The Central Palace of Trakai Castle houses an exhibition on the history of Trakai from the most ancient times to the middle of the 20th century. Sixteen exhibition halls in the western part of the palace display exhibits of applied arts of the 19th-20th centuries: furniture, pipes, stamps, clocks, porcelain, glassware, ivory and hunting trophy collections.
The castles of Trakai Island (15th century) and Peninsula (14th-15th centuries) belong to the museum as well as Medininkai Castle (14th century) in Vilnius Region, the Seraya Shapshal Karaite Museum, and the Sacred Art Exhibition in Trakai.
