Information about the museum
Gargždai Regional Museum is located in the city, where historically two ethnographic regions come together – Lithuania Minor and Lithuania Major (Samogitia). According to written sources, Gargždai was first mentioned in 1253. It has long been an important frontier settlement, a trading and parish center with a large Jewish town – until World War II, Jews made up a large part of the town population.
The museum is located in the territory of the Minija River Valley, in the historical site of the city – in the former 19th century manor, which until the 20th century was known as a local cultural center. The manor ensemble with the old park to this day commemorates the Rönne family of the Samogitian counts, but the building, which today houses Gargždai Regional Museum, was built as a living house. It was nationalized in Soviet times, returned to owners, and in 2005 the museum was established and is visited by over 10 thousand people every year.
Gargždai Regional Museum has 4 subdivisions: Museum of the History of Freedom Fights and Exile, Agluonėnai Ethnographic Homestead, Ieva Simonaitytė Memorial Museum, Jonas Gižas Ethnographic Homestead.
