Information about the museum
Jonava Regional Museum opened its doors in the old house of the former teacher Balys Garmus in 1989. During the Revival year, the house of exile Balys Garmus became a cultural center of Jonava.
In 1992 the museum was assigned the central building of the Old Horse Post Station, and a year later, in 1993, museum occupied the entire post office complex. Art, history and ethnography sections were formed.
Jonava Post Station was built in classicistic style in 1833–1835, building a postal route between the important cities of the Russian Empire – then the capital St. Petersburg and Warsaw. The station handled mail, freight parcels and horse-drawn passengers. There were rest rooms for Tsar's family members and officials. This route was used by senior travelers, civil servants, merchants and travelers from many cities in Russia and Western Europe; even Tsar Nikolajus the First was the guest.
The central building of the post station, which now houses the Museum's Fine Arts Section, was renovated in 2005. Exhibitions of lithuanian artists, commemorations of public holidays, public lectures, film screenings, thematic historical expositions are held here. The ethnography section exhibits ancient household items, folk art items from the inhabitants of Jonava region, there is a permanent exhibition “Linen Road”. In the basement of Jonava Regional Museum, at the end of 2014 a new exposition has been set up, displaying goods found during the archaeological excavations on the site of the dilapidated Skaruliai estate, representing one of the most important estate in Jonava region. The history section is currently closed for renovation.
