Information about the museum

The Ukmergė Regional Museum was established to collect, preserve, research, exhibit and promote material and spiritual cultural values associated with the history of this region.

The Ukmergė Regional Museum was founded in 1944. The museum's exhibitions show the history of the Ukmergė region from its beginnings to the mid-twentieth century. Archaeological finds and urban and rural political events from the 9th to the 20th century are presented: uprisings, the period of the independent state, the war, and the resistance afterwards. There is a separate exhibition on Jewish history. Also on display are valuable old wayside shrines and artistically forged crosses with ornate sun motifs.

The museum has the following branches: the Vepriai Regional Museum and the Užugiris Museum Complex (which includes the Manor House of President Antanas Smetona, the Užugiris School-Museum and the Centre for Ancient Crafts and Education), Siesikai Castle, Tolerance Centre and the Tourist Information Centre.

Užugiris Museum Complex	Užulėnio k., LT-20334, Ukmergės r. sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit The Užugiris Museum Complex is a branch of the Ukmergė Regional Museum. The Complex includes the Manor House of President Antanas Smetona, the Užugiris School-Museum and the Ancient Crafts-Education Centre The Užugiris Museum is located in a roadside village of Užulėnis in a palace-like building donated to the people of the region by the first president of independent Lithuania, Antanas Smetona (1874–1944). He helped to build one of the most modern elementary schools in Lithuania here in 1935. In this branch of Ukmergė Regional Museum, established in the building of Užugiris Antanas Smetona Principal School, objects of ethnic culture are exhibited, depicting the villagers' trades, crafts, daily life and customs. The museum organises educational activities and guided tours. The Užugiris branch of the Ukmergė Regional Museum has an Ancient Crafts Centre, where visitors can participate in ethnographic events and learn more about this region's history, traditions, customs, and culinary heritage. Set up in the adjacent premises of the Užugiris branch, the Ancient Crafts Centre offers educational activities. The Užugiris Museum itself presents not only a fascinating ethnographic exhibition but also educational lectures on the interwar and Soviet periods. The former Manor House of President Antanas Smetona houses a modern exhibition dedicated to President Antanas Smetona. The manor is part of the tourist route to the Ukmergė manors. The museum hosts various concerts, educational activities and organises guided tours.

The museum was founded in 1967 and became a branch of the Ukmergė Regional Museum in 1995. At present, the Vepriai Regional Museum has the following departments: History, Archaeology, Religious Art, Daily Life and Traditional Crafts, and Education. The museum has collected an extensive archive on exile and resistance and holds substantial material on the notable people of the Vepriai region. The exhibits, both on display and kept in the museum's collections, show the past of the Vepriai region; among them, the ethnographic, religious, and archaeological exhibits are the most fascinating.
Siesikai Manor Castle	Daugalių k., Siesikų sen., LT-20317, Ukmergės r. sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit Siesikai Manor Castle is a branch of the Ukmergė Regional Museum. It stands on the southern shore of Lake Siesikai, only a few kilometres from the town of the same name. The castle was built in the 16th century and remains one of the earliest and most mysterious Renaissance buildings in Lithuania. At present, the first floor of the castle has already been fully restored, while the second floor is still under restoration and investigation work. Visitors can tour both floors and see authentic murals and architectural features. Hour-long guided tours are organised.
Tolerance Centre	Vasario 16-osios g. 11, Ukmergė, LT-20131, Ukmergės r. sav., Lietuva	Information about the branch / unit The Tolerance Centre is a branch of the Ukmergė Regional Museum. The Centre opened in 2019 in a former Jewish boys' school in Ukmergė, founded in 1898 by the patron Chaim Frenkel from Šiauliai. The Centre aims to bring together the city's community for cultural and educational events and community celebrations, showcase Jewish and Lithuanian cultural heritage, and promote harmonious relations within the community and between different national cultures.
