Information about the museum
In the Old Town of Kaunas, near the Town Hall, is the only museum about the historical sports heritage in Lithuania, which has been open since 1991. In the museum's permanent exhibition, visitors can learn about Lithuanian sports history, the initiators of physical education and sports, the development of various disciplines, and see the prizes won by athletes not only in Lithuania but also at world tournaments. Awards and personal belongings of famous Lithuanian athletes - Olympians, world and European champions and record holders - are exhibited according to the corresponding sports disciplines.
The permanent exhibition presents Lithuanian sports history from its beginnings to the present, as well as the leading sports disciplines. The largest part of the exhibition is devoted to the most popular sport in Lithuania, basketball. Such sports as football, handball, boxing, swimming and rowing are also shown. Information is provided on the lives of Lithuanian emigrant and exiled athletes and on the sporting achievements of Lithuanians in emigration.
