Exhibit description | Vilniaus Gaonas – Elijas, Šloimės Zalmano sūnus (Elijahu ben Šlomo Zalman; 1720–1797), – tapo XVIII a. legenda. Jo vardas Vilnių pavertė Rytų Europos žydų tradicinės kultūros centru. Vilniaus Gaonas daugiausia dėmesio skyrė Toros ir Talmudo tekstų pirminės prasmės atskleidimui. Jis tapo XVIII a. žydų mąstytoju, Toros ir Talmudo mokovu bei komentuotoju, Šventraščio studijavimo metodų reformuotoju. Iki jo visas žydų mokymasis buvo tik Toros ir Talmudo studijavimas, kuriam žydai vyrai pašvęsdavo visą savo gyvenimą. Gaonas pabrėžė šios tradicijos svarbą, tačiau teigė, kad, norint geriau pažinti šventraščius, būtina išmanyti ir matematiką, ir istoriją, mokėti kitas kalbas. Jis atkreipė dėmesį į pasaulietinius mokslus, o tai galima prilyginti įprastos žydiškos mąstysenos revoliucijai. Vis dėlto, nors jis ir inicijavo mokslo darbų vertimą į hebrajų kalbą, nepasitikėdamas žvelgė į Haskalos, arba Žydų apšvietos, judėjimą, galintį išklibinti tradicinių žydų vertybių sistemą. Vilniaus Gaonas aktyviai priešinosi ir į Lietuvos žydų gyvenimą besiskverbiančiam chasidų judėjimui, pasak jo, taip pat keliančiam grėsmę tradiciniam judaizmui. Vilniaus Gaono palikimas įspūdingas: parašė komentarus beveik visoms Toros ir Talmudo dalims, studijavo ir raštu komentavo įvairių sričių mokslo darbus – trigonometrijos, astronomijos, geografijos, medicinos ir kt., parašė trumpą hebrajų kalbos gramatiką. Jam mirus per pusę šimto Vilniaus Gaono darbų jo sūnaus bei mokinių buvo parengti ir išspausdinti. Vilniaus Gaonas, savo laikmečio legenda, darė įtaką žydų kultūriniam gyvenimui net XIX–XX a. 1997 m. minint 200-ąsias Vilniaus Gaono mirties metines Valstybinis žydų muziejus pavadintas šio XVIII a. žydų išminčiaus vardu. |
