Exhibit description | Vilniaus Didžioji Sinagoga – svarbiausias Lietuvos žydų dvasinis ir kultūrinis centras nuo XVI a. pabaigos iki XX a. penktojo dešimtmečio, kai sovietų valdžios nurodymu ji buvo nugriauta. Nuo 1573 m. žydų bendruomenė Vilniuje galėjo turėti savo maldos namus. Tai buvo didelis įvykis Vilniaus žydų gyvenime. Pagal vyravusią tradiciją maldos namai buvo vienas svarbiausių ir reikšmingiausių dvasinių, kultūrinių ir mokslo židinių. Nėra žinių kaip atrodė pirmoji Vilniaus sinagoga. Vladislovas IV Vaza savo 1633 m. privilegija leido pastatyti mūrinę sinagogą, tačiau laikantis visų apribojimų, kurie galiojo Abiejų Tautų respublikoje, Vilniaus Didžioji sinagoga buvo 25 m ilgio, 22,3 m – pločio ir 12,1 m aukščio. Taigi beveik kvadrato formos. Dar 2 metrus buvo įleista į žemę. Šie žydų maldos namai savo dydžiu ir puošnumu pranoko visas Abiejų Tautų respublikoje pastatytas sinagogas. Kai kurie autoriai teigia, kad į ją tilpdavo keli tūkstančiai žmonių. Mūrinė sinagoga buvo renesanso architektūros stiliaus. Aplink Didžiąją sinagogą pamažu buvo formuojamas mažų sinagogų ir maldos namų (iš viso apie 11-13 pastatų) masyvas, į kurį įsiliejo garsioji Matijaus (Matitjahu) Strašuno biblioteka. Šventovių apsuptas kiemas su ritualine pirtimi (mikva) ir visuomeniniu šuliniu buvo vadinamasis „šulhoif“.Šiam kompleksui priklausė ir Gaono maldos namai. Iki XVIII a. pabaigos Vilniaus Didžiąją sinagogą siaubė 1655-1661 metais Vilnių okupavę rusai ir 1748 bei 1749 metų gaisrai. Tačiau, nepaisant stichinių nelaimių ir kitų nepalankių veiksnių, šioje šventovėje išliko dauguma meno kūrinių ir brangenybių, kurias buvo paukoję turtingesni bendruomenės nariai. Pirmojo pasaulinio karo metu nemaža dalis daiktų iš sinagogos buvo išvežta į Rusiją. |
