History of Lithuania Minor and objects in emergency currency
The Vytautas The Great War Museum, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the annexation of Klaipėda region to Lithuania, presents a virtual exhibition dedicated to the emergency currency of Lithuania Minor. Until 1923 Lithuania Minor has never belonged to Lithuania, although the Lithuanian ethnic group has lived in this region for a long time. During the period of German rule, when Lithuania Minor faced with the difficulties of the First World War, emergency currency - notgelds - began to be used. Individual cities and towns could have their own currency, which featured local celebrities, architectural and natural features, and historical scenes. In 1923 Klaipėda region was annexed to Lithuania and the Lithuanian currency - litas - was introduced.
